First day in Namabaale, where Safina's Noah's Ark project is based. Eight years ago, after she recieved a letter of thanks for donations, she and Mr Kaya began working with the local community, supporting them in micro-enterprise, providing training opportunities and basic healthcare check-ups. There is now a purpose-built community centre, with plans to start a nursery school in the coming year.
We kicked off at 9am with a children's session...75 blank faces who struggled to understand my accent! Thankfully magic Grace translated and a great time was had by all. We learnt a Spanish song, and played circle games.
Full programme started later with many villagers in attendance. Mr Kaya made a speech, SDA choir Words of Hope provided beautiful soundtrack. Ugandan music is very whispery and melodic.

Highlight of the day was meeting Alvin the goat that started this whole jamboree. Since he arrived from South Africa in January 8 kids have been born. He's not very friendly unless you're a female goat. But the babies are super fun (especially the tiny ones, less than a week old).

Watching Safina is exhausting, she is a total powerhouse. Up at 4am for devotions, forever recruiting people. On the plane, she gave out cards and extracted promises to volunteer from no less than three people. I've also learnt she supports a number of young people in Uganda, funding studies and providing accommodation. This dedication to her faith, those in need and the project often mean that she is late...quite understandable but may prove quite stressful for me over the coming weeks!
